Adults with type 2 diabetes use the once-weekly Ozempic Pen Semaglutide injection, a non-insulin medication, to improve blood sugar in addition to diet and exercise. Check that the OZEMPIC injection is a clear solution and has no particulate or coloration. Avoid mixing OZEMPIC with other insulin injections. Administer these injections separately. Take care that the injections are not adjacent to each other. You will need some supplies to give your Ozempic injection:
- OZEMPIC pen.
- Novo Fine Plus or Novo Fine replacement needles for the Olympic pen.
- alcohol swab.
- gauze pad or cotton ball.
- Use a disposal container to dispose of used OZEMPIC pens and needles.
How many clicks are in a 1 mg ozempic pen and 0.25 mg?
Ozempic 0.25mg/0.5mL-2mg/1.5mL:
- When a 0.25mg dose is selected, the pen will deliver 2/0.25 = 8 doses.
- When a 0.5mg dose is selected, the pen will give 2/05 = 4 doses.
Ozempic 1mg-4mg/3mL:
- Will deliver 4 doses if 1mg is selected.
How do I know when my Ozempic pen is empty?
- The plunger remains stationary when you turn on the dose control.
- The injection button does not release any medication.
- The pen is lighter than usual in weight.
- The dose counter is at zero or is not moving.
Ozempic and Weight Loss Injection Pen
Ozempic for weight loss: even though Ozempic injections are meant to control blood sugar, adult Ozempic users may drop up to 14 pounds.
- 8 lb (0.5 mg) and 10 lb (1 mg) of Ozempic versus 3 lb of placebo from initial weights of 202 lb.
- 12 lb (1 mg) and 14 lb (2 mg) for Ozempic from initial weights of 219 lb.
What is the Olympic dosage?
- Treatment initiation: 0.25 mg subcutaneous injection once weekly for 4 weeks.
- Regular treatment: After 4 weeks, the dosage is 0.25 mg; increase the dosage to 0.5 mg once weekly to a maximum of 1 mg once weekly. If you still need additional glycemic control after at least 4 weeks on the 1 mg dosage, you can increase the dosage to a maximum of 2 mg once weekly.
- Make sure to administer it on the same day every week, at any time of the day, with or without meals.
- If needed, adjust the weekly administration by ensuring that the doses last at least 2 days (>48 hours).
- For missed doses, if more than 5 days have passed, skip the missed dose and maintain your weekly dosing schedule.
You can administer OZEMPIC subcutaneously to the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Rotate the ozempic injection sites each week. Instruct patients to use a different injection site each week.
Warnings and precautions while using Ozempic
Never share Ozempic with other patients, even if you use a new needle. The same is true: do not share needles when using Ozempic. This is to avoid the risk of transmission of blood-borne pathogens. Monitor your condition each time the doctor changes your dose for hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia.
Do not inject Ozempic in the same area to prevent lipodystrophy or localized cutaneous amyloidosis.
Ozempic Side Effects
If using Ozempic, you must inform your doctor if you find the following symptoms and issues:
- Ozempic Pancreatitis Symptoms: You must discontinue using Ozempic promptly.
- Diabetic Retinopathy Complications Continue to monitor for diabetic retinopathy.
- Hypoglycemia: Concomitant use of Ozempic, another form of insulin secretagogue, or insulin may increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
- Acute Kidney Injury: Monitor renal function.
- Hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis and angioedema): discontinue OZEMPIC.
- Acute Gallbladder Disease.
- Lactation: Breastfeeding is not recommended.
- Females and Males of Reproductive Potential: Discontinue Ozempic at least 2 months prior if a female is planning a pregnancy.
- You or any of your family members have ever had thyroid disease.
The symptoms of hypoglycemia may include:
- Dizziness or light-headedness
- blurred vision
- anxiety, irritability, or mood changes
- sweating
- slurred speech
- hunger
- confusion or drowsiness.
- shakiness
- weakness
- headache
- fast heartbeat
- feeling jittery
Adverse Reactions to Using Ozempic
While using the Ozempic pen, the most common adverse reactions are:
- nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- abdominal pain
- constipation
Other serious allergic reactions could include one or more of the following symptoms:
- You may experience swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
- problems breathing or swallowing.
- severe rash or itching.
- fainting or feeling dizzy.
- very rapid heartbeat.
How do I store Ozempic?
Store Olympic pens in a clean, dry area. Handle the pen with clean, dry hands. Never re-use the needle, and discard the needle after each injection.
The following are the only places to store the Ozempic pen until it expires:
- Unused: Refrigerate but do not freeze (2°C to 8°C).
- After use, keep at room temperature (15°C to 30°C) for 56 days.
- After first use, refrigerate (2°C to 8°C) for 56 days.
Remember that regular physical exercise is crucial to treating diabetes or managing prediabetes, along with your diet planning, weight management, and medications.
Are Trulicity and Ozempic the same?
Trulicity vs. Ozempic: Clients always compare Trulicity with other medicines. Trulicity and Ozempic, both GLP-1 RAs, treat type 2 diabetes. They have similar mechanisms and purposes; however, they differ in some aspects. They lower HbA1c, a marker of long-term blood sugar management, in clinical trials.
Trulicity contains dulaglutide. Ozempic has semaglutide. Trulicity and Ozempic reduce blood sugar in type 2 diabetics.
Dosage: Trulicity is a weekly injection pen. Despite its weekly injection, Ozempic is also available as a single-dose pen.
Half-life: Ozempic outlasts Trulicity. Ozempic’s prolonged half-life may help it work and allow a weekly dosage.
Weight Loss: Ozempic has shown higher weight loss than Trulicity in various clinical trials. This weight-loss effect can help overweight or obese type 2 diabetics.
Cardiovascular Outcomes: In clinical trials, Trulicity and Ozempic reduced the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in type 2 diabetics with a history of cardiovascular disease.
Side Effects: Trulicity and Ozempic have the potential to cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Some people may tolerate one drug better than the other.
