What is Nesina Tablets (Alogliptin)?
(See detailed Medicine Prescription Information here)
Nesina Tablets is a prescription drug that inhibits the enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4). This drug works best to regulate blood sugar levels through physical activity and a balanced diet. Takeda Pharmaceuticals is the maker of the drug Nesina. People with type 2 diabetes who have not responded well to metformin and sulphonylureas typically receive prescriptions for dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors, also known as gliptins.
Drugs in this class also include:
- Januvia (Sitagliptin).
- Galvus (Vildagliptin).
- Onglyza (Saxagliptin).
- Tradjenta (Linagliptin) is approved for use in the USA.
- Nesina (Alogliptin).
What is Nesina used for?
Nesina tablets are prescribed for type 2 diabetes and should be taken along with other non-pharmacological therapies, including physical activity and dietary changes. Only adults over the age of 18 are allowed to use this medication. Before receiving treatment, give your doctor your complete medical history. Patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, a disorder that raises ketones in the blood or urine, shouldn’t use Nesina.
How do I take Nesina tablets?
Use the recommended medication, and do not change the dosage without consulting your doctor. Inform your doctor if your symptoms do not seem to be getting better. Even if you start to feel better, keep taking this medication. You should take this drug once a day, either with or without food.
What are the benefits of Nesina tablets?
A group of gastrointestinal hormones called incretins will help stimulate insulin production when the body needs it, e.g., after eating. Additionally, it decreases the glucagon the liver produces during digestion. DPP-4 is an enzyme that can destroy incretins. Gliptin’s class of drugs helps block the action of DPP-4. Thus, by protecting incretins from damage by DPP-4, the DPP-4 inhibitors help regulate blood glucose levels.
At the same time, alogliptin reduces postprandial and fasting glucose concentrations in a glucose-dependent manner.
Dosage
The three dosing strengths of Nesina tablets are:
- Nesina 6.25 mg
- Nesina 12.5 mg
- Nesina 25 mg
Every pill has a film coating and an oval form.
Nesina tablets once a day are advised for treating type II diabetes (with or without food). Doctors prescribe Nesina alone or in conjunction with other treatments. Reduce insulin or insulin secretagogues (such as sulfonylureas) when taking Nesina to prevent hypoglycemia.
We must modify Nesina’s dosage based on renal function. Therefore, patients with renal impairments should routinely have their renal function checked while taking Nesina tablets. Use half of the regular dosage for moderate renal impairment (12.5 mg). The recommended dose for people with severe renal impairment is Nesina Tablets (6.25 mg) once daily. The dosage of Nesina that the doctor recommends throughout each trimester of pregnancy may vary. Similarly, people who are nursing may require a dose adjustment.
Your doctor will decide on the correct dosage based on your illness and how you respond to treatment. Observe your doctor’s recommendations.
Nesina side effects
- Headache
- Stuffy nose
- Sinus pain
- Sore throat
- Nesina alone is unlikely to cause hypoglycemia, or dangerously low blood sugar.
Please be aware that this is not an exhaustive list of every possible adverse effect Nesina tablets may have. Other than those stated below, the medication may have additional adverse effects. Therefore, patients must visit a doctor if their negative symptoms worsen. In addition, patients should speak with a doctor if they are concerned about Nesina’s adverse effects.
Remember that regular physical exercise is crucial to treating diabetes or managing prediabetes, along with your diet planning, weight management, and medications. Being active increases the responsiveness of your cells to insulin, leading to a more successful lowering of your blood glucose, also known as blood sugar. Take your medications regularly, and follow up with your healthcare specialist.
